You are on holidays in The Oréades campsite in Sanguinet in the Landes and you want to visit Sanguinet without going too far in the department. We have some good news: we have found 10 touristic visits you can’t pass up.

 

1. The Museum of History and traditions in Biscarrosse

The Museum of History and traditions in Biscarrosse offers an overview of the traditional heritage of the Landes and more specially of the region of Born, and it also offers a boat ride to discover the swamps to the visitors.

It offers a free or commented approach of the history of the village, of the local culture and the way the environment has been made by men. It explains the formation of the dunes, the lakes hiding archaeological sites in their waters, the exploitation of the forest in the Landes, the pine-tapping and the exploitation of the resin as all the rural and handcraft activities.

 

2. The Municipal Museum in the lake of Sanguinet

It is necessary to imagine three villages, more than thirty pirogues and different objects submerged under the calm waters.

At the end of an organized trip over three topics, «sand, man and water », the Municipal Museum in the lake of Sanguinet invite you to discover or rediscover:

  • The history of the formation of the lakes in the Aquitaine coast;
  • The lives of men in Sanguinet from 1500BC to the 4th century, through an amazing archaeological heritage: the villages, the objects of daily life, the pirogues;
  • The aquatic life of the lake and its ecosystem.

 

3. The church Saint-Pierre-ès-Liens de Biganon in Moustey

The church Saint-Pierre-ès-Liens de Biganon is one of the three churches in Moustey. It may seem strange that a so small village in the Landes has got so many cult places, but it can be explained by the fact that the village of Biganon was incorporated to Moustey in 1964.

The Church Saint-Pierre-ès-Liens de Biganon, which was built during the 11th century, is a huge Norman building decorated by murals which were discovered only in 1982. This building, without any carved decoration, represents an example of the simplicity of the building of the Middle Age. Nevertheless, its organization is quite complex: a chevet with circular apse is completed with two apse chapels clearly separated from the main apse.

 

4. The Notre-Dame and Saint-Martin churches in Moustey

The Notre-Dame & Saint-Martin churches in Moustey, of Norman style, are built in “garluche” (a kind of sandstone) and have got a wall-belfry. The two churches were in the same cemetery, that was what made Dom Biron said, quoted by Abbot Baurien:

« I have run so much, I have travelled so much, but I never have seen two churches in the same cemetery. »

 

5. Michel and Jacqueline Kubiak’s garden in Saint-Paul-en-Born

Michel and Jacqueline Kubiak’s garden in Saint-Paul-en-Born is a haven of peace where numerous chosen varieties and species combine subtly. From the climbing plants to the ground-cover plants, all the strata are occupied. Clematis, ampelopsis, roses, sage, ceanothus, verbena and many more plants decorate the garden with many colours.

 

6. Sainte Ruffine fountain in Moustey

Dedicated to sainte Ruffine, the fountain of the village of Biganon, incorporated to the village of Moustey in 1964, is well-known for being miraculous.

The fountain is situated behind Biganon church. It is very popular because people believed that it had miraculous healing powers to cure skin problems for young children.

 

7. The Gourgue educational trail in Sanguinet

This 4,5 km wonderful trail follows the course of the Gourgue, the very small stream which is at the origin of the formation of the Sanguinet lake. The trail is marked with yellow on the trees and signs which explain the main species and environments of the ecosystem. The departure is on the right of the road which is in front of the Sanguinet church. Plan from 1h30 to 2 hours to do this trail. 8. The resin worker trail in Sanguinet

The resin worker trail is an educational path which shows the different steps of the pine-tapping and the evolution of the methods since the last century according to each season.

 

9. The Seaplanes Museum in Biscarrosse

10. The discovery trail « Le courant des forges » in Pontenx-les-Forges

By taking the discovery trail « Le courant des forges » in Pontenx-les-Forges, you will walk through an old humid zone, many pine trees where there are trees of different ages which are taken care until their exploitation. You will discover all along this trail a vestige of the feudal time (feudal clop). A botanic path completes this walk.
